Care-First is designed to shift the focus away from litigation and toward getting injured Albertans into care sooner. Under the new model, benefits are intended to be accessed directly through an insurer rather than through a lawsuit, with the goal of reducing delays between an accident and the start of treatment.
This is a significant structural change, not a minor update to existing coverage. Anyone injured in a collision on or after January 1, 2027 will be moving through a different process than the one drivers have relied on for years, so it is worth understanding the shift ahead of time rather than learning it for the first time after a crash.
